• Key Achievements/Milestones

    Wheelabrator’s achievements place the company at the forefront as an innovative industry leader. A long list of “firsts” at Wheelabrator includes:

    First Waste-to-Energy Plant in U.S. In 1975, Wheelabrator introduced the first large-scale, commercially successful waste-to-energy project in the U.S. when we opened the Saugus facility north of Boston, Massachusetts. 

    First Waste-to-Energy Plant to have a Materials Recovery Facility on Site. Wheelabrator Falls is the first and only privately owned, waste-to-energy plant with a Materials Recovery Facility on site.

    First to Install Advanced Air Pollution Control Technology. Wheelabrator Millbury was the first waste-to-energy facility in the U.S. to install advanced air pollution control technology to comply with new emissions standards set by the EPA on a large-scale municipal waste combustion facility. 

    First to Install Carbon Injection Systems. Wheelabrator Falls was the first waste-to-energy facility to install a full-scale activated carbon injection system in a U.S.

    First to Design More Efficient Boiler. Wheelabrator Falls has the highest temperature and pressure steam conditions of any municipal solid waste-fired boiler in the world.
