• WHEELABRATOR RIDGE ENERGY INC.

Wheelabrator's Ridge Generating Station is an independent power production facility for the disposal of waste wood and waste tires. The facility is located between Lakeland and Auburndale in Polk County, Florida.

Ridge Generating Station is an exciting component of Florida's integrated approach to solid waste management. Customers of the disposal facility enjoy the following benefits of conservation of local landfill space, an economically attractive alternative to current disposal methods for waste wood, and a viable end use of large quantities of waste wood and scrap tires.

The 31.4-acre parcel accommodates the power generating facility, waste processing and storage areas and other associated facilities. The power plant consists of one boiler that has a steam generating capacity of 345,000 lbs/hr and one steam turbine generator.

The waste wood and tires come from a variety of sources in the area. The plant has an electrical generating capacity of 50 megawatts and processes up to 300,000 tons per year of waste wood and approximately 30,000 tons of scrap tires into enough clean, electric energy to supply power to almost 30,000 Florida households.

The Ridge Generating Station has a staff of 38 operating and maintenance professionals who operate the plant 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Waste wood and scrap tires are delivered to the plant through an attended weigh station during scheduled hours.

The facility meets stringent air quality control requirements. The principal air quality emissions control system consists of a selective non-catalytic reduction system for controlling nitrogen-oxides, and a dry scrubber and fabric filter baghouse for control of acid gases and particulate matter. Through use of efficient air quality control equipment and appropriate operating procedures, the facility complies with all air quality protection requirements.
