Wheelabrator & the Community
Hear about Wheelabrator’s partnership with its host community first hand.
West Deptford and Westville, New Jersey are two communities in Gloucester County located on the Delaware River across from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Township of West Deptford boarders Westville along the river and is home to such leading companies as Sunoco, Johnson- Matthey, and Checkpoint Systems. West Deptford also hosts many of the museums and historic sites in New Jersey such as the American Swedish Historical Museum, the Indian King Tavern Museum, and the house of Walt Whitman, the famous American poet, journalist, essayist and humanist. The Audubon Free Public Library and the Amalthea Cellars Winery are other local places of interest. The borough of Westville has often been considered the “Gateway to South Jersey”. Throughout its history, this small town has had had several prosperous businesses, including a wheelwrighting company, sawmill, glass-manufacturing plant, and doll-mending factory among others. The Munitions Depot, which operated during the First World War was later sold to Texaco and is now the Eagle Point Refinery. Currently, West Deptford and Westville are home to approximately 24,000 people.
