Accountability to the Communities Where We Operate

Wheelabrator is dedicated to being a positive force in each community our facilities are located by actively participating and contributing to local activities and programs. As a community partner, Wheelabrator believes our social responsibility begins with the communities our employees live and serve and grows from there.

At all Wheelabrator facilities, our employees are encouraged to participate in activities designed to benefit the local community. This involvement allows Wheelabrator to foster positive local partnerships including sponsoring wildlife sanctuaries, public parks, senior citizen centers, and our annual Environmental Symposium, all of which help educate and engage local residents to protect our environment.

We strive to support the environmental, civic, charitable and educational well being of our partner communities.

Environmental Community

Wheelabrator is an ongoing member and strong supporter of the Nature Conservancy and the National Audubon Society. Wheelabrator also supports local Audubon programs and local environmental organizations specific to its host communities.

Civic Community

Many Wheelabrator employees are actively involved in civic-minded organizations such as local Chambers of Commerce, Rotary Clubs, Lions Clubs and other local philanthropic organizations. We also work closely with the local government, police and fire departments to support their initiatives in the community.

Charitable Community

Wheelabrator supports local charitable organizations within the host community most important to the local citizenry. For example, the American Red Cross, the United Way, local literacy centers, homeless centers and children's charitable organizations.

Educational Community

Wheelabrator understands the importance of investing in future generations both as mentors and as benefactors. We attend and support school events and also make contributions to local education organizations. We also work with local schools to educate students on proper waste disposal, recycling and related environmental issues.

The centerpiece of Wheelabrator's education program is the annual Symposium for Environment and Education. The Symposium puts into action the company's long-held belief that businesses and communities should help educators introduce real-life experience to young adults.
