Wheelabrator to Operate Hudson Falls Waste-to-Energy Facility

October 2003, HUDSON FALLS, N.Y. - Wheelabrator Technologies Inc. has reached agreement to take over operation of the Hudson Falls, N.Y. waste-to-energy facility for the next nine years - up until 2012.

Wheelabrator acquired the operating rights to the facility from the company that had owned and operated the plant under a long-term service agreement with the Industrial Development Agency (IDA) of Washington and Warren Counties. Under the new agreement, ownership of the plant was transferred to the IDA and, at the end of the existing service agreement in 2012, Wheelabrator has the option to lease or purchase the plant from the IDA.

The Wheelabrator Hudson Falls facility is an OSHA VPP Star-certified facility, bringing Wheelabrator's total for VPP Star plants to seven with an additional plant, Wheelabrator North Andover, awaiting final confirmation of its Star status.

Commenting on the newest addition to the company, Wheelabrator's President, Drennan Lowell said: " We are proud to welcome the Hudson Falls facility and its employees to the Wheelabrator and Waste Management family."

The Hudson Falls plant processes about 157,000 tons of municipal solid waste a year, or about 500 tons a day, generated by communities in Washington and Warren counties north of Albany and other communities in New York State and Vermont. The plant annually provides an average of approximately 84,800 MWH of electricity to the local utility company, Niagara Mohawk, enough energy to power almost 10,000 homes.

Wheelabrator Technologies Inc. (www.wheelabratortechnologies.com) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Waste Management, Inc. Wheelabrator Technologies operates 17 waste-to-energy facilities and six independent power plants across the United States.
