Wheelabrator Wins EPA Merit Award for Mercury Removal Success
BOSTON, MA - MAY 23, 2002 - Wheelabrator Technologies received the Environmental Merit Award for the New England Region from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in a ceremony in Boston on May 1st. Established in 1970, the award recognizes outstanding contributions on behalf of New England's environment. EPA selected Wheelabrator to receive this year's award for the Company's aggressive regional and company-wide efforts to reduce the threat of contamination from uncontrolled sources of mercury, a trace metal pollutant found in natural sources and discarded products such as thermometers, electrical switches, and other products.
Additional mercury thermometer exchange days were held in 2001 in conjunction with Day Kimball Hospital, in Putnam, Connecticut, resulting in the safe collection and recycling of more than 3,800 thermometers and more than 75 pounds of mercury. Wheelabrator also co-sponsored a statewide thermometer exchange program with the Connecticut DEP and has on-going activities in Massachusetts.
"The award celebrates individuals, businesses and non-profits that are models for all of us in our efforts to improve our communities," said Robert Varney, Regional Administrator for EPA's New England Office. "This award is a great way to recognize New Englanders who are going above and beyond to protect the environment."
