Westchester RESCO, Peekskill Middle School and Lakeland Copper Beech Middle School to Host Wheelabrator Symposium 2001
April 26, 2001 - Bear Mountain State Park - Seventh and eighth grade students from Peekskill Middle School and Lakeland Copper Beech Middle School will join Westchester RESCO, the Wheelabrator trash-to-energy plant at Charles Point, in hosting, at Bear Mountain State Park, Wheelabrator's Symposium 2001. The Peekskill and Lakeland Copper Beech students will join Westchester RESCO to welcome 125 students and their local Wheelabrator facility partners from seven Mid-Atlantic communities.
The students are participants in Wheelabrator's Symposium 2001. The goal of the Symposium is to involve students in realistic and thought provoking challenges, introduce them to a variety of community leaders and experts and encourage parent and community support and awareness. The students gain special knowledge of their community and a mature perspective on their responsibility for future planning.
Student teams partner with personnel from their local Wheelabrator facility. Each school receives a development grant of $500, and at the conclusion the team is presented with an award for excellence and an additional $500.
After months of research and development, the student teams orchestrate a twenty-minute presentation to showcase their conclusions. Each team will deliver their project before a VIP panel of judges and local dignitaries.
Wheelabrator Technologies Inc. based in Hampton, NH, is an environmental services and technologies company with 16 trash-to-energy facilities throughout the U.S. These facilities produce more than 650 MW of clean electric energy by burning over 23,000 tons of municipal trash per day, which is enough power for 650,000 homes.
