Saugus, Massachusetts
Wheelabrator's Bear Creek Wildlife Sanctuary in Saugus, Massachusetts will create a 200-acre wildlife sanctuary, abutting an 1800-acre estuary, just 5 miles from the City of Boston. Working with local citizens and state officials, Wheelabrator is transforming the land around a 207-acre landfill into a habitat for 17 state-listed endangered or threatened bird species.
Bear Creek's more than 2.5 miles of trails will provide easy public access to the largest bird migration staging area on Massachusetts' North Shore. Additionally, the sanctuary will include a 22,000-square foot sitting garden, five lecture areas, two observation blinds, and four viewing platforms throughout the nine restored ecosystems, providing a unique educational environment.
