Baltimore, Maryland
One of Wheelabrator's longest-running conservation projects is the Aquaculture
Center at Wheelabrator's Baltimore, L.P. facility. The Aquaculture Center,
which has been continuously operating since 1986, is used to successfully
raise threatened species such as striped bass (rock fish) and yellow perch,
utilizing a recirculating water system with a "bio-filtration" system.
The water that is used in the Aquaculture center comes from the plant's
once-through, non-contact, cooling water system. An annual event at the facility is the release of thousands of these successfully reared fish back into Gwynns Falls in conjunction with science students from the local Westport Elementary School.
